Animare have the
power to bring pictures they draw to life, and to contain life within them. A
book of Beasts was created to do just that, but now its missing and so is the
quill used to create it. Matt and Emily have a family tie, as descendants of
these medieval Animare, and are tied to keeping the book from being found. When they discover
they can time travel, they may have caused events that allowed the book to come
to light, at least most of its pages, they desperately try to fix their
mistakes.
This book cannot
function as a stand-alone, so read book 1 first. Unfortunately this series is
very serious, with a focus on its dangerous and heavy plot. I think that
students will find its lack of fun unappealing. For example, while the plot is
interesting, we never find the children exploring their powers for enjoyment. There needs to be a balance for younger readers in order to appeal
to their imaginations.
