We are Okay by Nina LaCour - OPTIONAL

LaCour, Nina We Are Okay, 234 pages. Dutton Books (Penguin), 2017. $18. Language: R (0 swears, 4 ‘f’); Mature Content: R; (teen sex)  Violence: G.

18-year-old Marin is alone in her N.Y. college dorm for Christmas break.  She has no family to go home to as her grandfather recently died.   Marin is having a difficult time dealing with everything - although her post high school summer was wonderful, it ended traumatically, with Marin isolating herself 3,000 miles away; she won’t answer calls, ignores texts and won’t talk about it with anyone.  But when her best friend Mabel comes to spend 3 days with her, Marin is forced to face the past 4 months.

This is a book about grief - Marin’s is deep, probably deeper than she understands.  The isolation of the empty dorm and the snowstorm mirrored her self imposed removal from her home and friends.  Her story is revealed slowly, sometimes painfully in this beautifully written Printz winner.
