Winterhouse by Ben Guterson - ESSENTIAL

Guterson, Ben Winterhouse, 370 pages.  Henry Holt (Macmilan), 2018.  $17.  Content: G.

Since her parents died in a car accident, Elizabeth Somers has lived with her irascible aunt and uncle.  Everything is depressing and dreary – until the day her aunt and uncle insist that they are taking a trip for Chirstmas break and she is not accompanying them.  Instead, she is sent off to the ominous sounding “Winterhouse”.  Instead of a creepy place, she finds instead a vibrant resort and friendly people.  Well, there is a mystery however – more than one, actually.  With the help of her new friend Freddy, Elizabeth hopes to solve the mystery of Winterhouse.

Well done Guterson!  He manages to be mysterious and hopeful without being hokey or even making every adult like they are blastedly stupid.  Unlike several recent novels where the children have solved the mystery that the adults should have been able to solve decades ago, the clues to this mystery aren’t obvious, but instead need the clue that Elizabeth unknowingly brings with her.  A tiny bit a supernatural danger adds a nice fillip to the story.  Give this one to your junior clue-solvers.
