Pliscou, Lisa Brave Jane Austen: Reader, Writer, Author, Rebel Illustrated by Jen Corace PICTURE BOOK Christy Ottaviano Books, 2018.
$18. Content: G.
Jane Austen lived in
England in the late 1700’s with her family of six brothers, a sister and her
parents. Her father ran a school at
their home, and they had a farm so Jane was always surrounded by learning and
work. As she grew up, she became aware
of the differences afforded women and she also learned that she liked to write. When she wrote she made her characters
disobedient and spunky and her books became popular and were published. She died when she was forty-one.
This is a biography on the author Jane
Austen. This an interesting book for
readers who love Austen’s works, as they are often times referenced throughout,
but I’m not sure younger reader will be interested in this text heavy picture
book biography. It seems like this book
would work better in a high school class to introduce the author before reading
one of her works.
