Kaiser, Cecily Up, Down and Other Opposites with Ellsworth
Kelly BOARD BOOK Phaidon, 2018. $11. Content: G. 978-0714876290
This is a book of opposites using the
abstract art of Ellsworth Kelly. The
page spread has two pictures that have something similar but are opposites. For example, one page has a huge black square
and the other has lots of tiny squares.
As far as opposites board books go, this one isn’t your traditional one
word opposite text. The author sometimes
explains why they are opposites or uses sentences like she is talking to the
shapes.
This is a part of the First
Concepts with Fine Artists series. The
pictures are cool and the text is entertaining. One confusing page was there is one picture that looks rough, but this isn’t a texture book and
it says “Watch out, fingers! This looks
very rough.” That said, it’s fun to look for concepts, like opposites, in an artist’s
work.
PRE-K – ADVISABLE. Reviewer, C. Peterson.
