A Girl named Rosa: The True Story of Rosa Parks by Denise Lewis Patrick - ADVISABLE

Patrick, Denise Lewis A Girl Named Rosa: The True Story ofRosa Parks Illustrated by Melissa Manwill EARLY READER Scholastic, 2018. $5. Content: G.

When Rosa Parks was a little girl she moved to Pine Level, Alabama with her mother and baby brother to live with her grandparents.  Her father had left them to find better work, but never returned so Rosa grew up at her grandparents’ home where they often times experienced racism. Rosa wanted to go to school and further her education but had to move away from her grandparents to do that.  She married a man named Raymond Park who was involved in the Civil Rights Movement and her infamous decision to not move on the bus was the catalyst for the bus boycotts in the South.  Rosa Parks went on to spend the rest of her life traveling and speaking about equality.

This is a short introduction to Rosa Parks from the time she is a small girl until she is old.  At the back of the book there is a timeline as well as a glossary with harder vocabulary words.  At the very back of the book there is also a connection between what Rosa did and a girl in today’s time, named Marley who made a difference by providing positive books for black girls.  This is a great short biography for newer readers and the American Girl brand will catch a lot of girl’s attention.
