Sheep Won't Sleep by Judy Cox- ADVISABLE

Cox, Judy. Sheep Won’t Sleep, PICTURE BOOK. Holiday House, 2017. $16.95.

Clarissa CANNOT sleep! She has tried knitting and lullabies and reading… nothing works. She finally resorts to counting sheep. Once she finishes counting, she realizes that ten sheep have appeared in her bedroom! They encourage her to try to harder, using alpacas this time, and count them by twos. As she continues to count animals, her room fills with sheep, alpacas, llamas, and yaks. Clarissa absolutely can’t keep them there, so she decides to try subtraction this time while collecting their wool. By the end of the night, she has knitted herself a lovely, colorful afghan, and finally feels tired enough to sleep. I love that this book counts the unorthodoxly colored animals in various ways. The illustrations keep things interesting and all the animals look really cute and cuddly. The concept of counting is livened up enough to keep readers interested. EL (K-3)- ADVISABLE.
