The Runaway Egg by Katy Hudson- ESSENTIAL

Hudson, Katy The Runaway Egg. PICTURE BOOK. Random House Children's Books, 2017.  $16.99. Content: G.

Little Chick is about to have a new baby brother!  His mother needs to leave for a bit and needs Chick to watch the unhatched egg.  “But why do I need to watch him? All the does is sit.  It’s not like he’s going anywhere…”  What is so exciting about an egg that just sits there? Soon after mother leaves, the egg cracks and the adventure begins! Chick spends the next few hours chasing the “cracked egg with legs” through the barnyard in an attempt to protect his little brother from danger.  When will the shell crack all the way? What happens if they don’t make it safely back to the coop before mother returns?

This is a great book that explores families, emotions, and barnyard animals all in the middle of a fun adventure children will love.  The illustrations are exciting and bold.  The story is fun and suspenseful.  Children will delight in this book.

Pre-K.  EL (K-3).  ESSENTIAL.  Reviewer: SL.
