No Honking Allowed!, PICTURE BOOK. Holiday House, 2017. $16.95.
Two dinosaurs go on a ride through the city in Rex’s brand new convertible. Rex loves to honk his horn, but Stego wants him to follow the rules because all the signs say “no honking allowed! (except for safety).” But Rex wants to honk at his friends, honk at a litterbug, and honk at some kids to make them smile. When there actually becomes an emergency Rex finally gets Stego’s permission to honk his horn so that everyone will move out of the way for an ambulance.
I think this book was supposed to be about how it’s important for us to follow rules? I wasn’t completely clear. It just made it seem like honking your horn is a bad thing, but that didn’t seem like all that important of a lesson for kids (since they can’t drive yet and can’t really understand all of the nuances of when and when not to honk).
PRE-K, EL (K-3)- OPTIONAL. Reviewed by Shay, School Librarian
