Pace, Anne Marie Pigloo, illustrated by Lorna Hussey.
PICTURE BOOK. Henry Holt and Company, 2016. $16.99
Pigloo is a little pig with
big plans to explore and reach the North Pole. His older sister, Paisley,
couldn't be less interested in his idea. So Pigloo sets off alone with his
sled, searching for polar bears and a red & white pole. When he finds them,
Paisley is already there! Together they build an igloo and head back home
"the short way" for lunch. This time when Pigloo proposes going
exploring (after the South Pole and penguins!) before dinner, Paisley is all
in.
I really enjoyed this story about adventure and ultimately the friendship
between brother and sister. Pigloo, Paisley and even their parents are really
endearing characters and I liked the realistic family vibe you got from all
their interactions. The illustrations are wonderful and the story is just the
right length for a nice read-aloud. I think this book will be most popular
during wintertime when kids are looking forward to playing in the snow, but the
message at the heart of it is relevant no matter the season.
