Nick the Sidekick by Dave Whamond - ADVISABLE

Whamond, Dave Nick the Sidekick, 48 pages. GRAPHIC NOVEL Kids Can Press, 2018. $15. Content: G.

Nick has big ears, which gives him super hearing.  As a small kid he was teased for his ears, but he was recruited straight out of school by the superhero Super Fantastic Guy, as a sidekick (or as Nick likes to be called a superhero assistant). Super Fantastic Guy takes Nick through all the training, and there’s a lot Nick can’t do-like fly, but Nick is also great at picking up information that helps stop crimes.  Nick gets frustrated as Super Fantastic Guy keeps taking all the credit, even though Nick’s the one who helps bring down the bad guys, so Nick has to figure out a way to get some recognition.

Nick is a great character and the illustrations are bright and appealing.  This is a clean, fun graphic novel that’s easy to hand to the younger crowd and they can successfully read and enjoy.  I hope there are more graphic novels with these characters.
