Hero: Rescue Mission by Jennifer Shots - OPTIONAL

Shotz, Jennifer Li Hero: Rescue Mission, 180 pages. Harper Collins Publisher (Harper), 2017. $18. Language: G (0 swears); Mature Content: PG; Violence: PG.

Hero, the K-9 rescue dog, returns to action. This time his mission is to save the person who trained him. Ben’s father has been taken hostage by two escaped convicts. Ben and Hero join forces to find him before it’s too late. Along the way they make a new friend who helps them track the trail of the convicts through the forested mountains.

Although part of a series, the book is strong enough to stand alone. The characters show true feelings as they struggle through a scary and emotional situation. The book is too scary for the youngest grades but not scary enough for older grades. It would work for third through seventh grades. A good book for those who love dogs and those who like stories of friendships forged in difficult times.
