Holm, Jennifer L. and Matthew Holm GRAPHIC NOVEL Swing It, Sunny. 218 pgs. Scholastic. 2017. $9.99. Language: G ( 0 swears, 0 “f”); Mature Content: G; Violence: G.
Sunny’s brother Dale has gone away to boarding school to help treat his drug problem and bad behavior (see Book 1 “Sunny Side Up”) and Sunny is missing him a lot. Between tending her little brother, planning for Halloween and Christmas, catching up with grandpa on the phone and watching Soap Operas, her life is busy, but when her autumn allergies kick in, she learns that a shot will help make her feel better. If only there was a shot to help Dale, so that when he was home things wouldn’t be so rough. Dale is angry and sullen and not the older brother Sunny remembers.
This graphic novel is a great snapshot of someone experiencing family problems. Funny, poignant and honest, this deals with a sensitive subject without being too mature for younger readers, we see regular days and hard days - life goes on.
