Tavares, Matt Red & Lulu. PICTURE BOOK.
Candlewick, 2017. $18.
Red and Lulu have raised generations of cardinal chicks in
their evergreen tree. One day, however, when Red is away, the tree is cut down
with Lulu in it, and hauled away. Red
tries to follow, but loses sight and can’t find Lulu again until he hears the
same song that his people used to sing in the winter time. Following that song, red and Lulu are
reunited.
A sweet story that combines the many birds who nest in pines
and the dignity of the Rockefeller Square Christmas tree. I didn’t know that each year the tree used is
donated to Habitat for Humanity for the lumber to build new housing for those
in need.
