Ancona, George Boys Dancing: From School Gym to Theater Stage. PICTURE BOOK. Candlewick Press, 2017. $16.99. Content: G.
This book details the National Dance Institute of New Mexico's affiliation with the local public school system. It focuses on the skills these particular boys learn in order to learn to dance, and shows them preparing for and putting on a final performance.
The title and cover suggest that this will be a book that celebrates boys who dance, but in reality it is more a summary of this very specific, year-long dance program. The synopsis-like style of the text, as well as its niche focus on the National Dance Institute of New Mexico's in-school dance program, significantly narrows the audience for this one. That said, I would love to see a book that actually does celebrate all the many ways in which boys, too, can become dancers -- a promise I feel this book failed to fulfill.
