Fancy Party Gowns: The Story of Ann Cole Lowe by Deborah Blumenthal – ADVISABLE

Blumenthal, Deborah Fancy Party Gowns: The Story of Ann Cole Lowe PICTURE BOOK.  Little Bee books (Bonnier), 2017.  $17.99.  Content: G.
This is the picture book biography of Ann Cole Lowe, an African American women who defied the odds of her time period, both as a woman and facing racism. She learned to sew young, and after her mother untimely death, took over the dress making business. Her career took off from there, with many famous people wearing her dresses. She faced many setbacks and disasters with dignity and hard work. Features lovely bright illustrations.
This is a wonderful book that shows perseverance in the face of a variety of odds, including just plain bad luck. Ann is a great role model. I wish there was just a tad more biographical information, students will be very interested. Student readers will want pictures, if nothing else, of her clothing designs. This book is very focused on her career, it would have been helpful if there had been a bit more to it.
