Valuable Players: The Basketball Blowout, 100 pgs. A Stepping Stone Book, 2017 (Random

Five friends are on a basketball team
together and they want to win a competition among the other teams so they can
go to a tournament. Another competition
is introduced in which the teams are competing to sell popcorn and there are
fun prizes. The MVP Club (as the friends
call themselves) have to learn to work together so they can win their
basketball game and one of them can win the grand prize of sneakers in the
popcorn competition. After a rocky start
they learn to help each other and win.
This chapter book has a simple plot which is well done and there are a
few pictures throughout. The friends treat each other well and befriend a boy who seems left out. My only
complaint is that the five friends were hard to differentiate and so it’s hard
to keep track of who does what. The
Ballpark Mysteries by this author are a
lot better, but if you have beginning readers who loves sports then this is a good addition.
