As the Germany army
has encroached into his small French village, life for Marcel and his parents
has become more and more difficult.
Every time Marcel makes a bread delivery for his parents’ bakery, he
runs into troops who need to be bribed in order to let him pass.  During one of his deliveries, Marcel decides
to eat a piece of one of the loaves and finds a note tucked in side.  Are his parents working for the
Resistance?  Meanwhile at school, Marcel
becomes friend with Delphine, a new girl in the village, but he is worried that
she also may be hiding a deadly secret.
There aren’t a lot of World War II books written at an
elementary level lately, so this one might be worth the investment.
