Claire originally thinks that the worst part of 8th
grade is going to be being left behind as her two best friends advance to the
upper level dance classes, leaving her behind with the “babies”. Then comes the morning her father has a
stroke at the breakfast table. Now he is
at home from the hospital and struggling just to feed himself. Claire can’t relate to this alien who has
taken over her beloved father’s body and avoids him as much as possible until
her brother and mother confront her about her attitude and she finds a way to
re-engage with her father and find some rays of hope with this new reality.
If you think that it would be impossible to write a comedic
book about a stroke victim, you would be dead wrong You just have to give the challenge to
Sonnenblick – the man who also made cancer hilarious! Of course, he also manages to keep everything
realistic, which makes is that much more emotional.
