A Squiggly Story by Andrew Larsen, illustrated by
Lowery, Mike Kids
Can Press, 2016. $16.95. PICTURE BOOK
This is a story about a big sister who loves to read and write
and a little brother, who wants to write a story. The big sister encourages
him, and the little boy begins a story. The problem is that he doesn’t know how
to write yet, but he adds a few letters and some symbols and that starts his
imagination off. With a little help from his class, his story really takes
flight.
This is a terrific story for kindergarten teachers to read to
their class (must add that my school has a writing specialty so this book is just perfect). Don’t just give
up even if you don’t know the letter or the spelling of words, you can still
write and tell stories. The story the little boy writes is cute and fun and I love the friendship
with the big sister, who encourages him but doesn’t write the story for him. The
illustrations are simple, easy to share, and typical for the style of Mike Lowery.
