One Year in Coal Harbor is the companion book to Everything
on a Waffle, Horvath’s Newbery Honor Book. In this second installment of
Primrose’s story, she is interested in finding a friend her own age; someone
that isn’t an adult. When a foster
child, Ked comes to live with some of Primrose’s friends, she finally finds
someone she connects with. While
Primrose is busy with her new friend, a logging company comes to the mountains
in Coal Harbor. The town is dismayed at
the prospect of having a scar upon their mountain and they decide to picket the
proceedings.
I didn’t find this
companion book quite as endearing as Horvath’s first. It was a little more convoluted, especially
at the beginning. It was descriptive
enough of the last story to stand on its own, but I don’t think I would have
been as interested in reading it if I hadn’t read Everything on a Waffle. I was
already invested, so I wanted to read the second book. Once the initial section got underway, the
book finally picked up and there was plenty to hold my attention for the rest
of the story. It was a basic tale though, with little “typical” action.
