Anne Frank’s Chestnut Tree by Jane Kohuth –ADVISABLE

Kohuth, Jane Anne Frank’s Chestnut Tree 48 pgs. Random House Books for Young Readers, 2013. $8.66.  Content: Language: G (0 swears); Mature Content: G; Violence: G. EARLY READER
This is a Level 3 step into reading book about Anne Frank. The book provides a bit about her background, how she was once just a normal girl. It then delves into how World War 2 affected her life and how her family had to go into hiding. It talks about how the Chestnut tree she could see from the attic window helped her feel calm and brave. It concludes with how Anne’s writing and her chestnut tree continue on today.
This was a wonderful book, I loved the tie-in of the chestnut tree. I am not sure that typical age of Level 3 readers are ready for the mental and emotional challenges of learning about World War 2.  But this would be a great book for upper grade low level readers though, I find its good to have a range on the important subjects.
