Sackett, Frances The Misadventures of the Magicians Dog 192 pgs. Holiday House 2013. $13.41  Content: Language: G (0 swears); Mature Content: PG (Stress about War); Violence: G.

Peter is an angsty boy who is worried and even angry at his father, who is off at war.  In the midst of his turmoil, is his birthday. Peter ends up with a dog, against his wishes. Turns out this is no ordinary dog, but a magician’s dog, who wants to teach him magic. Peter jumps at the chance, he is determined to bring his dad home. But things go awry when it turns out magic has a higher cost than Peter is willing to pay. A crazy fast paced adventure full of magic and danger helps Peter to discover his love for his family.

This is my favorite kind of book, a tricky book!!  There is a magical theme and a fantastic cover that draws students in like flies, and then ends up teaching them subtle real life lessons. This book is truly about how to cope with the real anger and fear that a child feels when a parent goes to war and how to transform these feelings into love and communication. Awesome book!!!
