Wheeler, Eliza. Miss Maple’s
Seeds. PICTURE BOOK, Nancy
Paulsen Books (Penguin), 2013. $16.99.
Content: G. Miss Maple (a really
little old woman) gathers seeds that didn’t get planted. She takes them home to her tree house and
cares for each one. During the day she teaches
the seeds about soil and safety. At
night she reads to them throughout the cold winter and wet spring. Then she sends the seeds off to make their
own roots. Always reminding them to, “Take
care, my little ones, for the world is big and you are small.” With ink and soft watercolors, Wheeler creates
an unforgettable world that is detailed and delightful. This is a picture book for all ages. Children will revel in the illustrations and
simple story. Adults will appreciate the
deeper meaning and timeless truths that the story holds. The book is a perfect present for a teacher
or a mentor who sees the seed of potential in every student.
Pre-K, EL(K-3) – ESSENTIAL.
