Chia’s mother has breast cancer. Now that she’s in 8th grade, Chia is old enough to take care of her younger siblings and help around the house a lot more. When the family makes a trip to the Cathedral of the Virgin of San Juan to ask for healing and make a “promesa,” Chia promises to participate in a 5K for breast cancer and get 500 people to sponsor her.
This book chronicles Chia’s experience helping her family as her mother goes through cancer treatment including a mastectomy and radiation treatment. Chia’s little sister is gifted and looks a lot of information up on the internet keeping the family (and the reader) informed. A few frank discussions and several “boob” references, but still appropriate for Middle School. The characters are a bit young to recommend this for High School. MS OPTIONAL Lisa Librarian
