Carter, Aimee The Goddess Test, 304 p. Harlequin Teen, 2011. $9.99.
Language: PG (10 swears, 0 ‘f’).
MS, HS – ADVISABLE.
From New York City high life to minuscule Eden, Michigan – Kate’s mother has dragged her to mom’s hometown so that Mom can spend her last days there. Intrigued by hottie James and not so happy with mean girl Ava, Kate should have been suspicious when Ava invites her to a rager in the woods. When a practical joke turns deadly, Kate finds herself making a bad bargain with Henry, a wealthy recluse – she promises to be a modern Persephone and finds herself reliving a myth. Now she spends her day rambling inside a huge mansion, wearing gorgeous, confining clothes and interacting with characters from Greek Mythology – only they are real people. She has to survive the next few months, or Henry will die and the Underworld will be turned over to someone else. While Kate may not love Henry the way he loved the original Persephone, she is determined to survive, save Henry and get back to her mother. Seven secret tests and someone who wishes her dead are all that stand in her way.
Whoa – I don’t want to give away too much. Let it be said that even if you don’t know mythology, you will still enjoy reading about Kate and her world. Kate is feisty and courageous and Henry is handsome and brooding. Rich description lends jut the right air to every scene.
