The Less Dead by April Lurie - OPTIONAL

Lurie, April The Less Dead, 219 p. Delacorte (Random), 2010.  $16.99.  Language: PG-13 (30+ swears, no”f’); Violence PG (murder victims).

Someone is killing gay teens who live in foster care in Noah’s hometown of Austin, Texas.  Until Noah, son of an evangelical radio talk show host and poster child for rebellious teens meets Matt, a gay foster kid, he doesn’t really care much.  When Matt is the next victim, Noah suddenly cares a lot! And now he is on the hunt for a murderer.

This book is much more than a murder-mystery-thriller.  It more about what we do to marginalize people in our society who don’t fall within the norms and about the power of hatemongers.  The author does paint evangelical Christian groups as villains with a pretty broad brush and includes a preachy section in the back of her own.  But in all, I enjoyed Noah’s journey.
