Epossumondas Plays Possum by Coleen Salley

Salley, Coleen Epossumondas Plays Possum illustrated by Janet Stevens 40 pgs. Harcourt Children's Books, 2009. PICTURE BOOK. $16.00. Epossumondas, our sweet little patootie of a possum, displays his bravery...or his forgetfulness...as he meanders after a butterfly into the scary ol' swamp where the dreaded loup-garou lives. Once he is in there, he gets lost and starts hearing scary snarls, hisses, and snorts. So he does the one thing every good possum should do--play dead! Luckily, none of his predators eat dead meat, except the one with the big, ugly claws...can Epossumondas escape the dreaded captors claws?!?
Kids might get a bit scared while reading this one! The illustrations are quite realistic and add to the spooky feel of the story. As more background to this Louisiana legend, it would be good to read the note from the author in the back which explains what the loup-garou (an old French word for werewolf) is. EL-ADVISABLE. Whitney, Library-Teacher.
