Labatt, Mary Lake Monster Mix-Up 96 p. Kids Can Press 2009. $16.95. Language - G; Sexual Content - G; Violence - G.
Written comic book style, this is about Sam, a shaggy dog, and his friend Jennie. Sam's owners don't have time to play with him, and he is always bored. Luckily, Jennie, his neighbor, takes him on her family trip to Sagawa Lake. Sam is looking for an adventure and hopes to find one in the forest. Jennie, her friend Beth, and Sam learn that Sagawa Lake has a scary secret. After finding an old diary in their cabin that confirms the rumor of Sagawa Lake being haunted, the girls and Sam try to find the ghosts. The ending is funny, and the girls realize that Sagawa Lake isn't haunted after all. I was surprised how good of a plot this was, considering it was more like a comic book. The illustrations were good, and it was easy to read.
