Spires, Ashley Gordon: Bark to the Future, 72 pages. GRAPHIC
NOVEL Kids Can Press, 2018. $16. Content: G.
Gordon is a dog from P.U.R.S.T
(Pets of the Universe Ready for Space Travel) and his team of other pets is
nowhere to be found when an alien invasion of fleas comes to his home. In an attempt to thwart the invasion, Gordon
goes back in time to try and head off the fleas before they infiltrate his
home. He makes a couple of mistakes with
the time machine, but in the end Gordon saves the day.
The illustrations in this graphic novel are
colorful and well done. I liked Gordon,
but I felt like I was being dumped in the middle of a story without any
character or setting development. There
are other P.U.R.S.T graphic novels, but I can’t find whether or not they go in
a particular order. There needs to be
more clarity about the order of these books and then I think they would be fun
and much loved especially by younger readers.
