Bramsen, Carin. Just a Duck?, PICTURE BOOK. Random House, 2015. $17.99. A little duck is pretending to be a cat and asks a cat friend to play. Cat takes duck to a tree to test out their climbing skills, but duck just can’t make it work without claws. Duck takes cat to the lake to test out their swimming skills. Cat isn’t interested in that plan, but when a leaf blows in on the breeze, he can’t help but leap to try to catch it… right into the water. Cat is stranded but Duck comes to the rescue. They find that they might not be the same animal but they can both shimmy and shake the water off of them. The pictures in this book are really appealing and look to be computer generated. Duck’s behavior definitely reminded me of a toddler playing pretend. The friendship demonstrates a great connection between two very different animals who also have a lot in common.
