Clough, Lisa Petal and Poppy and the Spooky Halloween! Illustrated by Ed Briant. Green Light Readers, 2014. $12.99. Content: G.
Poppy wants Petal to dress up for Halloween, but Petal is too scared to do so until Poppy talks her into it. When their bike tire flats outside a haunted house, though, it's Petal's turn to be the brave one.
The book feels like a simple graphic novel in style and layout, which can be fun for some readers, although both this and the repetitious use of the word "Gaah!" make it a little tedious for a read-aloud. The plot doesn't totally hold together, either, especially at the end when the text and illustrations seem to disagree about whether or not the ghost is real. While children who love scary stories may be intrigued by this one, those who frighten easily could have some trouble after reading.
