Peggy Fitzroy is
an orphan who lives with her grumpy uncle and beloved cousin. When Peggy’s uncle makes an unsavory match
for her marriage, she stands up to him and refuses to marry. She is kicked out of the house and ends up in
the care of Mr. Tinderflint, who claims to have known her mother. Mr. Tinderflint wants Peggy to pose as a maid
in waiting at King George I’s court and keep tabs on the rebellion. Peggy finds that it is hard to know who is
good and who is bad, as well as uncover the mystery of a murder.
I enjoyed this book because the main
character was spunky and smart and she tried to do the right thing in a hard
situation. I loved the historical facts and information from the early 1700's in England that were hidden within the fast moving plot. I would have this book be essential, except
the mature content was Peggy coming across two people making love and she was
almost raped-it was not overly described, but enough to move it to advisable,
instead of essential.
