Slater, Dashka Dangerously Ever After, illustrated by
Valeria DoCampo. Dial (Penguin), 2012. $17. Content:
G. PICTURE BOOK.
Princess Amanita prides herself on
having very dangerous things – especially the plants in her garden. When she meets Prince Florian, however,
she asks him for the seeds from his roses, which instead grow to become
“noses”, which cause a big mess. I
have to say, I think the illustrations outclass the story in this book, though
the story is just fine. I love
that neither author nor illustrator resorted to a heroine draped in black,
cobwebs nor spiders in order to convey her nerve and unconventionality. I think this is a very charming
addition to many collections – and not really for Halloween at all.
