Cunnane, Kelly. Daly, Jude. Chirchir is Singing, 40 pgs. Schwartz & Wade, 2011. $17.99. Inside cover: “Chirchir just wants to help. But she drops Mama’s water bucket, spills Kogo’s tea, and sends Baba’s potatoes tumbling down the hill. Everybody has a special job to do. Isn’t there something that Chirchir does best?” This is a wonderfully written and illustrated book about belonging. The setting is set in Kenya and the story depicts the rural African life. My kids enjoyed trying to sound out the character’s African names. We loved the simplicity of this book. We loved the emotions. We loved the ending. This book could be used in a unit on chores/careers, self-esteem, families, or Africa. Pre-K. EL (K-3) EL. ADVISABLE. Reviewer: SL.
