A Letter to My Teacher by Deborah Hopkinson - GIFT

Hopkinson, Deborah A Letter to My Teacher, illustrated by Nancy Carpenter PICTURE BOOK. Penguin Random House 2017. $17.99. Content: G.

A young woman recounts her year in 2nd grade in a letter to her inspiring teacher.  The girl was (admittedly) a bit of a handful and also had a difficult time learning to read, but this teacher showed patience and kindness in working with a precocious child and made her 2nd grade class the most memorable of all.

This lovely picture book would make a great gift to show appreciation for a teacher, or as a send off into a new teacher’s first year.  This feels more like a picture book for adults (nostalgia), as I don’t think children recognize the impact of their teachers until later in life.

Thanks so much for featuring my book! Nancy Carpenter's artwork is so wonderful, I think.

I had the chance to share it with students at author visits this spring (I often do choral reading of my books in simplified versions with 1-3 graders), and many kids talked about how they sometimes felt the same as the girl in the story. Students in 2nd and 3rd grades wrote thank you letters to their teachers. My favorite: "You helped me be a better reader and a better kid."
