Oliver, Narelle Tide Pool Secrets (A Lift-the-flap Book) NON-FICTION PICTURE BOOK. Candlewick Press, 2017. $18.99. Content G.
The secrets of a tide pool are revealed as the flaps are lifted to expose the sea life hiding there, including sea anemone, hermit and decorator crabs, shrimp, Goby, and sea snails among others. The prose describes what you might see in a tide pool (an octopus?) and how they keep themselves moist or safe when the water recedes. The final pages open to show the entire tide pool free of text to find all the sea life together.
The flaps are not on every page and are so well matched in color that I had to feel around to make sure I wasn’t missing one. There’s a glossary at the end (of sorts) with further information on the creatures seen in the book. There is so much camouflage, however, that this book works much better on a lap or alone than read to a class.
