Dolan, Elys The Mystery of the
Haunted Farm Nosy Crow (Candlewick), 2016. $17.99 PICTURE
BOOK
This is the story of a
farmer who call for some ghost hunters, who are pigs. These ghost hunters check
out the entire farm but can’t find anything. (They don’t notice the ghosts, the
zombie ducks, and the mummy goats). Then they make a truly horrifying
discovery!
This is an oversized
picture book that has a ton of cover appeal. I liked the idea of the story
itself, very creative, but it didn’t
play out very well for younger readers. There are many things children wouldn’t
get: ghost hunters show references, phone books, old fashioned telephones, and
vocabulary like unrefined and abort. I found the word Idiot, as well, which
seals the deal for me not adding it to the school library. The illustrations
are sloppy and busy in a confusing way, not in a fun planned out way.
