Lyra and her friends are heading towards Svalbard in the hopes of
freeing Lyra’s father from the bears guarding the prison. Along the way they are also hoping to rescue
all of the children that have been kidnapped by the Gobblers, wicked people who
are separating children from their soul animals. Lyra uses her special compass, the help of a
rogue polar bear and all of her friends to help the children.
This book is the second in a series of
graphic novels. The illustrations are
great and I love the story and characters. Based on that alone I would love to
recommend this book; however, the
violence is gruesome and disgusting, making it hard to recommend, especially
because it is a graphic novel and depicts all of the blood. There is a decapitated head, a bear rips a
person’s throat and they show a trepan which is when they cut a hole in the
skull bone. Yuk!
