Telgemeier, Raina Ghosts, 239 pgs. Scholastic, 2016. $24.99. Content: G.
Catrina and her family have moved to northern California, for her little sister, Maya, who has cystic fibrosis. Catrina is sad to have moved away from her friends, and she especially doesn’t like how everyone in this small town is always talking about ghosts. Maya, on the other hand, really wants to meet one, and is looking forward to Dia de los Muertos.
Telgemeier is a sure-fire hit with young teen readers, and this doesn’t disappoint. It is a bit different from her other books as the ghosts are real (summoned by orange soda) and can interact with the town, but the family relationships, angst, friends and personal struggles are spot on.
