Hershey, Mary
Love and Pollywogs from Camp Calamity, 215 pgs. Wendy Lamb Books (Random House), 2010. $15.99. Language – PG, Sexual Content – PG; Violence - PG.
In this third book about fourth-grader Effie, she can't wait to go to camp so she can learn to swim, hang out with her two best friends, and win the Outstanding Camper of the Week medal. Unfortunately, it all goes awry when she finds out her big sister is going to camp, too, to work in the kitchen. Then, the moment Effie arrives a strong bout of homesickness swamps her. And things just get more tangled - and enjoyable - from there. Effie is a great character – funny and sweet and very honest – and her story was a lot of fun to follow. Although this book mostly stands alone, I would advise purchasing the first two in the series (My Big Sister Is So Bossy She Says You Can’t Read This Book and 10 Lucky Things That Have Happened to Me Since I Nearly Got Hit By Lightning) if you get this one, so kids can read those first and fill in any gaps.
