The Chiru of High Tibet by Jacqueline Martin

Martin, Jacqueline Briggs The Chiru of High Tibet, illustrated by Linda Wingerter.  Houghton, 2010.  $17.99.  PICTURE BOOK.  Content: G.  The chiru of the Tibet highlands were on their way to extinction, as poachers stalked them for their extremely soft wool.  George B. Schaller, a field biologist recognized the danger and with the help of four avid hikers, was able to track down the elusive animals’ birthing grounds and convince the government of China to protect them.  Martin and Wingerter’s picture book distills the story to its core, while preserving the challenges the hiker’s and Schaller encountered trying the track the animals.  What a great addition to a unit about the power that man has to harm and to help the world around us.  EL, MS – ADVISABLE.
