Lighter than Air: Sophie Blanchard, the First Woman Pilot - ADVISABLE

Smith, Matthew Clark Lighter than Air: Sophie Blanchard, the First Woman Pilot, illustrated by Matt Tavares.  PICTURE BOOK.  Candlewick, 2017.  $17.

In 1783, Sophie heard about the first manned balloon flights and her imagination was captured.  Eventually she met and married Jean-Pierre Blanchard, a balloonist and together they took to the skies.  After Jean-Pierre died, Sophie knew she had to keep flying, which she did, until her own death in the skies.

Add another picture book to the list of women who dared.  The tidbits are very rewarding to read as we balance out the idea that only the men of history performed dangerous exploits.
