The Guinevere Deception by Kiersten White, 337 pages. Delacorte (Random), 2019. $19.
Content: G (some fighting)
BUYING ADVISORY: MS, HS - ESSENTIAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH
Guinevere has arrived in Camelot to become King Arthur’s wife. But what only Arthur knows is that Guinevere is no pampered princess bride, in fact, she isn’t even Guinevere – the girl she is has given up her name in order to protect Arthur. As she tries to navigate court life, her personal champions seem to be her handmaiden Brangien and Arthur’s nephew Mordred.
I don’t want to give anything away. What I want to say is that White is a master at taking what you thought was the canon of a long-lived legend and adding twists that feel true to the original and new depths. It has been a long time since White has written a book created from new whole cloth –I would love to see what original works are in that clever brain of hers.
