Daniela the Pirate by Susanna & Gomez Isern - OPTIONAL

Daniela the Pirate by Susanna & Gomez Isern. PICTURE BOOK. nubeOCHO, 2018. $17. 9788417123123

BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - OPTIONAL.

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

Everyone on the open seas fears the pirate ship of Choppylobe, except for one sailor, Daniela, who is determined to be a part of the ship’s crew. She must prove her worth by passing tests of bravery, strength, and skill but fails the final test of being boy. The crew stands by her, however, and kicks Captain Choppylobe off the ship.

There is a lot of appeal to books about girls doing things that are typically ascribed to boys. While very heavy handed in this book, it is still a message that will resonate with some readers. The illustrations are bright and active but a little too busy at times. The story felt cliché to me without any great writing to boost its appeal.
