Crice, Tom Birds of a Feather: A Children’s Story of
Love, Loss, and What Came Next. PICTURE BOOK. Tom Crice, 2018. $12. 9780999685303
This is a very personal short story of the author who experienced
the loss of his much loved grandfather at a young age. He didn’t understand
death and goodbyes and heaven. When he experienced two little birds flying into
his subway car and accidently getting off at different stops, it served to
function as analogy of he and his grandfather being separated as well –but still
being able to fly. This was the start of his grief recovery process. Features
simple colored pencil illustrations.
I am not sure that young readers will understand the analogy
presented in this story. I feel like this is one of those really personal self-published
stories that might be better off as a family book, than for wide consumption. I
probably wouldn’t add this to my collection but will pass it along to our
school counselor.
