Drummond, Ree and Diane deGroat Charlie the Ranch Dog: Charlie's New Friend. HarperCollins, 2014. $3.99. Content: G.
When Charlie sees a bunny stealing a carrot from Mama's garden, he's determined to stop the culprit. But the bunny is spry and very determined, and more than a match for Charlie.
Even after reading this book multiple times, the plot still felt unclear, and the resolution was quite rushed, with Charlie's sudden and unwarranted change of heart adding to the overall confusion. Also, yes, many people find bacon more delicious than carrots, but Charlie's obvious disgust when he tries a nibble of carrot, coupled with his "I'm so happy to be a bacon-eating ranch dog instead of a carrot-eating rabbit" does not encourage children to eat healthful meals.
