Marie Antoinette, Serial Killer by Katie Alender -- OPTIONAL

Alender, Katie Marie Antoinette, Serial Killer, 304 pgs. Point, 2013. $18.99. Language - PG; Mature Content - PG-13; Violence - PG-13.

When Colette goes on a class trip to France, she expects to have fun sightseeing with her two rich, popular best friends -- while also hiding the secret that her parents are divorced and she is now destitute. But a serial killer is on the loose in Paris, and as the bodies stack up Colette realizes that the ghostly visions of Marie Antoinette she keeps seeing may be more than her overactive imagination. They may, in fact, hold clues to the murders.

This is a fun, fairly fast-paced read with some interesting twists and turns. The history sprinkled throughout enriches the plot, as do the Parisian setting, Colette's character growth, and the growing romance between Colette and her tour guide. Unfortunately, while the climax has a huge lead-up, it is ultimately anti-climactic and less satisfying than expected, making it difficult to enthusiastically recommend. In addition, the story may not appease die-hard horror fans, as few scenes are truly horrific or chilling, and the focus often seems more strongly centered on Colette's relationships with her friends, classmates, and romantic interest.
