12th grader Tessa has been battling for school supremacy with Reed Walker her entire high school career. She certainly didn’t want to end up dead with him after a high school rager she didn’t want to attend and in a musty old house. First Reed and Tessa need to get used to being dead, and then to being stuck with each other. As they learn to maneuver their new existence, they discover that not only were they murdered, but that the murderer is after Tessa’s best friend and they have a very limited time to save her before they need to depart this world or be doomed to wander it and forget who they are.
An enemies to lovers story with that fateful twist. The narrative alternates between Reed and Tessa’s points of view. For all that the characters swear a lot, it is a sweet, and terrifying story. I like the choices Reitz made with the countdown doors for the newly dead, too.
