Recently graduated high school senior Addae is next in line to lead Golden Isle, where her ancestors once fled to for safety. Her grandmother is the current matriarch and a healer who makes elixirs that keep the islanders strong. Addae is waiting to Light, or to take full control of her abilities. But then her friend Nara goes missing in a boat accident. Everyone else presumes her dead, but Addae refuses to give up. Addae also knows that something more must be going on, especially after a body washes up on the beach drained of blood and her grandmother has a strange trance.
This novel is wonderfully rich in West African mythology and Akan folktales. Nonetheless, I wish the novel would have explored Addae’s powers a bit more throughout, and the ending felt rushed. Overall, it’s a unique and memorable take on a vampire tale.
Addae is Black and LGBT+. Nara and most of the islanders are Black.
